A conversation starter is a button that shows in the chat before the visitor types anything. Starters show visitors what they can ask. For buttons that show after each answer, see Add follow-up suggestions.

Before you start

Add a starter

A starter can do one of two things:
1

Open Conversation Starters

In your chatbot’s sidebar, under Customizations, select Conversation Starters.
2

Choose the Button Action

In the Add Button form, select Send Message or Open Link.
3

Enter the Button Label

In Button Label, enter the text that shows on the button. For example, Pricing.
4

Enter the message or the link

  • For Send Message, enter the full question in Message Text. For example, What are your opening hours?
  • For Open Link, enter the URL in Link. For example, https://example.com/contact.
5

Add the starter

Select Add Button. The starter shows in the list.
When you have two or more starters, use the move up and move down arrows in the list to change their order. The widget shows the starters in the same order. To change a starter, select Edit next to it, change the fields, and select Update Button. To remove a starter, select Delete next to it.
When a visitor selects a Send Message starter as their first message, SiteGPT adds a tag to that conversation. The tag is the button label in capital letters. In Chat History, use the tag filter to find these conversations. See Review conversations.

Show a starter only on some pages

By default, every starter shows on every page of your website. To limit a starter to some pages, fill in Show on pages when you add or edit it.
1

Open the starter

Select Edit next to the starter, or start a new one in the Add Button form.
2

Enter a page path

In Show on pages, type a path and press Enter. Add each path separately.
3

Save

Select Update Button or Add Button.
Use these path patterns:
  • You can add up to 20 paths to one starter.
  • If you paste a full URL, SiteGPT keeps only the path. It ignores the query string and the # part.
  • If a path is not valid, the starter does not save and the form shows an error.
In a new conversation, the widget shows the starters whose paths match the visitor’s current page, plus every starter with an empty Show on pages.
The dashboard preview does not run on your website pages. To test a starter that shows only on some pages, open those pages on your own website.

Starters on other channels

On channels that are not your website, such as Slack or Messenger, there is no page. These channels show all your starters. Show on pages has no effect there. See Integrations.

Check that it works

  1. Open your website in a new private browser window.
  2. Open the chat. Your starters show as buttons in the new conversation.
  3. Select a Send Message starter. The chatbot answers your message text.
  4. If you scoped a starter to some pages, open one of those pages and one other page. The starter shows only on the matching page.
