What is a WhatsApp AI chatbot?

A WhatsApp AI chatbot is software that reads the messages customers send to your business WhatsApp number and writes the replies. Older WhatsApp bots follow a menu: press 1 for opening hours, press 2 for returns. An AI chatbot reads the question as written and answers from your own content.

SiteGPT builds the second kind. You train one chatbot on your website, files, and help center. The same chatbot then answers on your website and on WhatsApp, so both channels give the same answer to the same question. The method behind it is retrieval-augmented generation: the chatbot looks up the relevant passage in your content at question time and writes the answer from it.

Is this allowed on WhatsApp?

Yes. Since 15 January 2026, Meta's terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform bar AI providers whose assistant is the primary thing on offer, which is why OpenAI withdrew ChatGPT from WhatsApp that month. A business may still use an AI provider to serve its own customers. A chatbot that answers your customers from your content is that use.

Which WhatsApp number does the chatbot use?

You choose one of three options when you connect. Each number connects to one chatbot. The right option depends on whether customers already message you on a number they know.

Get a free number

Easiest

A new US (+1) number that only the chatbot answers. No SIM card. Customers anywhere in the world can message it.

You need: A Facebook login

Fits: A business with no WhatsApp number yet, or one that wants a separate line for the chatbot.

Keep your WhatsApp Business app number

Keeps your number

The chatbot answers on the number customers already have. Your team keeps using the app, and a reply from the app pauses the AI in that chat.

You need: The WhatsApp Business app on your phone, to scan a QR code

Fits: A UK or US business whose customers already message a known local number.

Connect a dedicated number

Your own number

A separate number of your own that only the chatbot answers.

You need: A spare number that is not on WhatsApp yet, and a Facebook login

Fits: A business that wants a local number for the chatbot and has one to spare.

The free number is a US number with a +1 prefix. It works for customers in any country, but a UK business with a known local number will usually keep that number so customers see no change. Disconnect a free number and it is released for good. Disconnect an app number and the app keeps working as before.

How do you set up the WhatsApp chatbot?

There are four steps, and only the third involves Meta. Any team member with the Manager, Admin, or Super Admin role can connect the number once the owner has added the add-on. The full reference is the Connect WhatsApp docs page.

  1. 1

Train the chatbot on your content

Create a chatbot in SiteGPT and give it your site URL or sitemap. Add the PDFs, help center articles, and documents that hold the answers your pages do not. Test it in the dashboard until the answers are right.

  2. 2

    Add the WhatsApp add-on

The chatbot owner opens Advanced, then Integrations, then All Integrations, and clicks Get Started on the WhatsApp card. The Billing page asks to confirm the add-on. One add-on covers every chatbot the owner has.

  3. 3

Pick how to connect a number

Choose a free US number, the number you already use in the WhatsApp Business app, or a dedicated number. Click Continue and finish the setup with Meta on the secure page that opens.

  4. 4

    Send a test message

From another phone, send a text to the number. The chatbot replies from your content, and the conversation appears in Chat History in SiteGPT.

The screen-by-screen version, including what to pick on Meta's phone number screen, is in how to create a WhatsApp chatbot.

How does handoff to your team work on WhatsApp?

A conversation goes to your team in one of three ways. The person taps an Escalate button. The chatbot decides the person needs a human, which requires human support to be on. Or a team member takes over from the SiteGPT dashboard.

While a person has the conversation, the chatbot saves new messages and does not reply. Your team answers from Chat History in SiteGPT and the reply arrives in the customer's WhatsApp. To give the chat back, select Release to AI, or resolve the conversation so the next message starts a new one.

Reply from the dashboard

  • Works with all three number options
  • Replies go out from Chat History in SiteGPT
  • Delivered within 24 hours of the customer's last message

Reply from the WhatsApp Business app

  • Works only when you keep your app number
  • Your reply pauses the AI for that conversation
  • The AI stays paused until you resolve or release the chat

What can the WhatsApp chatbot not do?

Five limits are worth knowing before you connect a number. Each one comes from the SiteGPT docs or from WhatsApp's own rules.

LimitWhat it means
Text onlyThe chatbot reads text. A photo or file with a caption is read as the caption. Voice notes, stickers, and media without a caption get a reply asking the person to type the question.
24-hour reply windowA reply your team sends from the dashboard reaches the person only within 24 hours of their last message. After that it is saved to the transcript and not delivered.
Lead forms need Meta verificationWhatsApp shows in-chat forms only for verified Meta businesses. Until then the AI asks for contact details in a plain message.
One number per chatbotEach WhatsApp number connects to one chatbot, and each chatbot connects to one number.
Not for broadcast campaignsThe docs describe replies to people who message you. They describe no bulk sends or marketing template campaigns, so a broadcast tool is a separate purchase.

A team that sends order updates, reminders, or promotions to customers who have not messaged first needs a broadcast tool with approved message templates. SiteGPT then sits alongside it as the layer that answers the replies. The platforms built for broadcasts are covered in best WhatsApp AI chatbots.

How much does a WhatsApp AI chatbot cost?

With SiteGPT the cost is a plan plus the WhatsApp add-on. Yearly billing is a lower rate, shown per month and billed annually. The lowest total is $78 a month billed yearly, or $118 a month billed monthly.

ItemMonthlyYearly, per monthIncludes
Starter$59$39billed $468/yr1 chatbot, 1 team member
Growth$129$79billed $948/yr2 chatbots, 4 team members, chat integrations
Scale$429$259billed $3,108/yr3 chatbots, 10 team members, webhooks, Zendesk
WhatsApp add-on+$59+$39billed $468/yrOn any plan. Covers every chatbot the owner has.

Read on the pricing page on 13 October 2026. WhatsApp messages count against the plan's monthly message allowance, the same as website messages. Enterprise pricing is custom.

Most WhatsApp platforms add Meta's message fees to their own subscription. Meta charges per delivered message by category and country. Since 1 October 2026 that includes replies to customers beyond the first 1,000 a month on each number, as its pricing documentation sets out. With SiteGPT the add-on covers WhatsApp conversations, so the bill is the plan plus the add-on. The rate card for the US and UK is laid out in WhatsApp Business API pricing.

Is a WhatsApp chatbot right for regulated data?

It depends on the data. WhatsApp is a channel run by Meta, so anything a customer types passes through Meta's platform before it reaches any chatbot vendor.

HIPAA assessed, BAA on Enterprise only

HIPAA. WhatsApp is not available in a SiteGPT HIPAA workspace by default, and a BAA is Enterprise only. Meta's own terms say the WhatsApp Business Platform is not HIPAA compliant, so keep patient information off the channel.

GDPR certified by DPLMC International

GDPR. SiteGPT is GDPR certified, with a signed DPA on the Enterprise plan. Meta is a separate provider in the chain, with its own terms for WhatsApp Business data.

See the SiteGPT security page →

A US healthcare practice should read is WhatsApp HIPAA compliant before putting any patient conversation on the channel. A UK or EU team weighing a chatbot against data protection law can start with the GDPR chatbot requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Does SiteGPT work with WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp is a paid add-on available on every SiteGPT plan. You connect a WhatsApp number to a chatbot, and the chatbot answers the messages people send to that number from your own content. Your team can reply from the SiteGPT dashboard, or from the WhatsApp Business app if you keep your app number.

How much does the WhatsApp AI chatbot cost?

The WhatsApp add-on is $59 a month billed monthly, or $39 a month billed yearly at $468 a year. It sits on top of a SiteGPT plan, which starts at $59 a month billed monthly or $39 a month billed yearly. One add-on covers every chatbot the owner has. Meta does not bill you separately for WhatsApp conversations, because the add-on covers them.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. There are three options. You can get a free US (+1) number that only the chatbot answers, keep the number you already use in the WhatsApp Business app, or connect a dedicated number that is not on WhatsApp yet. A business with customers who already message a known number usually keeps that number.

Can I keep using the WhatsApp Business app?

Yes, with the Keep your WhatsApp Business app number option. The chatbot answers on your existing number and you keep using the app. When you reply to a customer from the app, SiteGPT shows the reply in the conversation and pauses the AI for that chat until you resolve it or release it back to the AI.

What happens when the chatbot cannot answer?

The conversation goes to your team. That happens when the person taps an Escalate button, when the chatbot decides the person needs a human and human support is on, or when a team member takes over in the dashboard. While a person has the conversation, the chatbot saves new messages and does not reply.

Does the chatbot understand voice notes and images?

No. The chatbot reads text only. A photo or file sent with a caption is read as the caption. For voice notes, stickers, and media without a caption, it replies asking the person to type the question.

Can it collect leads on WhatsApp?

Yes. With lead collection on, the chatbot sends a WhatsApp form with the same fields as your website lead form. WhatsApp shows in-chat forms only for verified Meta businesses, so until your business is verified the AI asks for the details in a plain message. If booking is on, the chatbot sends your booking link after the form.

Can I send WhatsApp marketing broadcasts with SiteGPT?

The SiteGPT documentation describes answering people who message your number, and replies from your team inside 24 hours of the person's last message. It describes no bulk sends or marketing template campaigns. A team that needs broadcasts runs a WhatsApp marketing tool for that job and uses SiteGPT as the answer layer.

Is WhatsApp available in a SiteGPT HIPAA workspace?

Not by default. Integrations are off in a HIPAA workspace, and the WhatsApp documentation says WhatsApp for a HIPAA workspace is scoped as part of an Enterprise package. A HIPAA BAA is available on the Enterprise plan only. Meta's terms state that the WhatsApp Business Platform is not HIPAA compliant and that Meta is not a business associate, so a healthcare practice should use WhatsApp only for questions that involve no patient information.
