# Change the language and text of the widget

> Translate or reword the fixed text in the chat widget, and set the language of message timestamps.

The chat widget has fixed text around the conversation, such as button labels, status messages, and form labels. Use the **Language & Region** page to translate this text or to change its wording.

## How language works in SiteGPT

* **Widget text** is the fixed text in the widget. It is in English by default. You change it on the **Language & Region** page.
* **Answers** come from the AI. There is no setting for the answer language. The AI usually answers in the language that the visitor writes in, but SiteGPT does not guarantee this. To ask for a specific language, add it to your [instructions](/docs/guides/answers/write-instructions). Then test the result.
* **Smart follow-up suggestions** are written in the language of the conversation.
* **Text that you write yourself**, such as the welcome message, conversation starters, and fixed follow-ups, shows exactly as you wrote it. SiteGPT does not translate it.

## Before you start

* Role: Manager or higher on the chatbot. See [Invite and manage team members](/docs/guides/account/team-members).
* The translated or reworded text that you want to use.

## Set the timestamp language

The widget shows a relative time under each message, such as "just now" or "2 minutes ago". You cannot type this text. You can only choose its language.

    In the **Language** section, select a language in **Timestamp language**. The list has 47 languages. The default is English.

The timestamp language changes only the wording of the relative times. It does not change the widget text or the answer language.

## Change the widget text

    In your chatbot's sidebar, under **Customizations**, select **Language & Region**. You can also open it from **Settings** > **Localization**.

    Find the section for the part of the widget that you want to change. Most fields show the default English text as their label.

    Type your text in the field. Leave a field empty to keep the default text.

    Select **Save Changes**.

The page has these sections:

* For right-to-left languages such as Arabic or Hebrew, turn on **RTL Mode** on the **Appearance** page.

## Check that it works

1. Open your website in a new private browser window, and open the chat.
2. The widget shows your text in place of the default English text.
3. Send a message. The time under the message is in your timestamp language.
